Banana Republic Credit Card Review

4.7 / 5

  • You’ve got two options (sort of). There are two Banana Republic Credit Cards: The Banana Republic Mastercard Card and the Banana Republic Store Card. But it’s not a take-your-pick type of situation. There’s one application, and the card you ultimately get depends on your credit standing. People with good or excellent credit typically get approved for the Mastercard, while folks with fair credit are more likely to get the store card.

  • Solid rewards for the whole family. By “whole family,” we mean Banana Republic, Old Navy, Gap and Athleta. Either Banana Republic credit card will give you 5 points per $1 spent at all of those stores, equal to 5% cash back. Most retailer-affiliated cards only offer bonus earning rates for a single brand. And that’s largely why you shouldn’t care whether you get the Banana Republic Mastercard or the Banana Republic Store Card. The only extra thing the Mastercard gives you is the ability to make purchases anywhere Mastercard is accepted and earn 1 point per $1 spent in the process. But you can find a far more rewarding card for purchases made outside the Banana Republic family.

  • Costly to carry a balance. Both Banana Republic Credit Cards have an APR, which is well above the rates charged by the average credit cards for both good (24.12%) and fair (26.41%), according to WalletHub’s latest Credit Card Landscape Report. And neither Banana Republic card offers 0% intro rates. Needless to say, they aren’t the right plastic for carrying a balance from month to month, so make sure to always pay in full.

  • No annual fee is standard, but still nice. Most retailer-affiliated credit cards don’t charge annual fees, so this is unlikely to help you decide between such offers. But the fact that neither the Banana Republic Mastercard Credit Card nor the Banana Republic Store Card charges an annual fee does save you about $22.29 per year, compared to the average credit card.

How much is the Banana Republic Credit Card foreign transaction fee?

Reply

Robert Stark, WalletHub Credit Cards Analyst

@robert.stark

The Banana Republic Credit Card foreign transaction fee is 3%. This means the issuer will add a 3% surcharge anytime you use the Banana Republic Credit Card outside of the United States. The 3% fee also applies to online purchases made through an internationally-based merchant.

The Banana Republic Store Card, on the other hand, does not have a foreign transaction fee. This is because the Banana Republic Store Card doesn't allow you to use the card for this type of transactions. Its use is restricted...

Yes, you can use the Banana Republic Credit Card anywhere Mastercard is accepted. That is virtually anywhere in the world where credit cards are accepted, as Mastercard benefits from extensive worldwide acceptance.

If, on the other hand, you have the Banana Republic Store Card, its use will be restricted to U.S.-based Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, and Athleta stores, along with their corresponding online stores.

The Banana Republic Store Card, though, accepts people with fair credit or better, but it can only be used at Banana Republic and affiliated stores.

Sorry, you'll need good credit, so something along the lines of 700+. With no credit, you're better off just getting a “Limited History” card.

"Horrible bank, do not do business with them. The bank and the card are completely out of sync; they try to mislead customers by not processing returns correctly. When calling the bank for help on a return, they are very nice on the phone, but claim they have no insight into what is happening with a credit due for a return. The Barclays Bank customer service representatives are very rude and tell customers they have no insight into what is happening with a return. If the bank is going to offer this card, they need to synchronize and process returns in a timely manner. It has taken over a month, and my return is still not processed. Barclays says they know nothing about it, even though on the return side it says the return is complete for over three weeks. So, no one can answer any questions, and my 800-dollar credit is stuck somewhere in limbo, with no one able to answer any questions about it. I am very disappointed in both companies. I was aiming to get other sizes and colors after my return was processed, but I wanted to use the card to get extra discounts and points. Since no one will process my return, I can't use the card, and now the sizes and colors I wanted are selling out. Very frustrating. Perhaps this is the scheme they have set up.

My husband and I both have the same rewards card with the same number. Recently, he received an email saying his $244 rewards on his card would expire the next day. On the day he found the email, that the offer would expire. So he called me to give me a heads up knowing I would use those rewards more than him. I clicked the shop now button on the very same rewards message and logged into my account. It wouldn’t acknowledge the points, after I had already loaded up my cart and applied the same credit card as payment type. When I called, they said it had to be under his “account.” He doesn’t have an online shopping account with Banana. Just me, because I have a Gap account with the same parent company. This rewards system is confusing and makes no sense. You should be able to share the rewards considering one partner may have use for the reward more than the other person who earned the credits. Say for shopping for kids clothes, for example. When I called Banana rewards, they wouldn’t budge.

I highly wouldn’t recommend this card if you share a card with your partner.

Horrible Barclay Bank took over sent me a new card then for some reason I no longer had an account when I tried to active it . I been a customer for years never late and have a 700+ credit score. Capital One took over my williams sonoma card the switch was seemless and they gave me a increase credit limited 6 month later. Guess I won't be shopping at gap old navy and BR anymore goodbye .

If only I could give one star, I would have. Would you like to be able to close your account when you have a zero balance? If so, this is not the card for you. Neither is the Gap credit card the card for you. You can write to them and request that or you can call Customer Service and request that. But it will not be done. Clearly, Banana Republic and The Gap do not want you to have the right to close your account once it's been paid off. Don't think very carefully before applying for their credit card. Just don't. Apply for a different card in a different store.

The cap on rewards spending is $250 per purchase. Literally had been saving all year for a $600 leather jacket only to not be able to make this purchase. Just spoke with "senior leadership" and they said there is nothing they can do. Ha. Total scam. Will be cancelling this card. It's been nothing but a headache.

Worst card! Regret getting this one. First of all, they are not like Chase or Capital One but they still make a hard inquiry dropping your credit score. Not worth it. It’s a useless card. Also, when my credit score temporarily dropped because of a reporting error this was the only company to decrease my credit limit within weeks. Regardless, I am going to close this card and I discourage all my friends and family from buying this card!
