French onion dip was invented by an unnamed Chef in the 1950's when he discovered that adding Lipton's french onion soup mix to sour cream made a delicious dip. It was first known as "California Dip", but later took on the name "French Onion Dip" as it rose in popularity.

This version holds true to the original and much-beloved recipe, but sneaks in a few extras for better flavor and texture. I just know you'll love it as much as we do!

Why You'll Love It:

  1. Perfect for parties. Who can resist the classic French onion dip!? Serve it with some salty potato chips and watch it disappear.
  2. Easy. If you don't have the time to make homemade french onion dip with caramelized onions and beef broth, this version is a happy compromise between store-bought and super fancy.
  3. Flavorful. We use a packet of onion soup mix, but give it a little boost with garlic, onion powder, and green onions.

What to Serve with French Onion Dip

Storing Leftovers

Leftover onion dip stores well for up to 4 days as long as it's tightly covered in the refrigerator.

For the best results, transfer the leftovers to an airtight container and stir in the garnish before storing.

Make Ahead Instructions

  1. Prepare the dip as instructed, leaving off the garnish amount of green onions.
  2. Chill for up to 24 hours before serving.
  3. Garnish with green onions and serve.

While the dip can be stored for up to 4 days, it's best when serving to guests for it to be fresh and chilled. It will still taste great within the 24 hour time frame!

Substitutions

French Onion Dip with Greek Yogurt: Swap the sour cream for a good quality plain Greek Yogurt. I recommend using a 3-5% option, as they are ultra creamy, but 0% works fine too!

Gluten free: Be sure to check the label of your French Onion Soup Mix. Many national brands contain wheat or barley, meaning they are not gluten free. Some brands (Knorr, the last time I checked) and store brands are gluten free, so be sure to select those ones instead.

Low carb: This recipe is low carb as written. To keep it that way, serve with low carb options like celery sticks, keto tortilla chips, etc.

With cream cheese: Substitute the sour cream and mayonnaise for 8 ounces of brick-style cream cheese. Make sure it is well softened, and whip it until smooth and creamy before adding the other ingredients. Thin it as needed with some sour cream if desired.

Recipe FAQs

Do I need to chill the dip before serving?

Chilling the dip is not required, but it is encouraged. Allowing the flavors to mingle together makes for a better tasting dip, but it's totally fine to serve it right after making it if that works best for you.

Is french onion dip gluten free?

It depends. Store-bought prepared french onion dip is often gluten free, but recipes that have been prepared with a packaged mix often have gluten. To be sure, check the packaging of the prepared dip OR the package used to prepare the dip to make sure it is free from gluten-containing ingredients like wheat and barley.
