IELTS Speaking Part 1: The Weather (1)

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real examplein your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

What's the weather like where you live?

Answer 1:

This is where I live right now. (China, Zhuhai)

I live in a small seaside city called Zhuhai, and as a southern Chinese city, the weather is mainly hot and humid. The summer lasts for quite a while, and some people joke about it being over six months long. The temperatures can go up to 35 in the summer but do get down to 10 in the short winter.

My Personal Answer:

The weather varies, depending on the season. There has definitely been an impact from climate change recently, however, we still have four distinct seasons - spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The temperature can go as low as minus 5in the winter and as high as 35 or even at times 40 in the summer. My city has a nice, comfortable climate, suitable for living.

My Personal Answer:

Do you prefer cold weather or hot weather?

Answer 1:

I prefer the warm and sunny weather of the summer. This is my favorite time of the year when I can enjoy a nice walk in the park, absorb some sunshine and feel warm and comfortable. I don't like cold, at all.

My Personal Answer:

I'd say cooler weather. I'm not a fan of hot, humid temperatures, as I sweat a lot and that disturbs me. I hate sweating. My ideal temperature is somewhere in the range of 15 to 20 degrees, and I could even accept 25 but no more than that. I enjoy wearing shorts and t-shirts, and so these temperatures are ideal for my favorite wear. What's more, I can go hiking, and that's one activity done best in cooler weather.

My Personal Answer:

Do you prefer dry weather or wet weather?

Answer 1:

I'm not sure. I've tried both and I think a little bit of both is the best. Too humid makes everything wet and sweaty, and too dry... well the opposite. So I likebalanced weather the most.

My Personal Answer:

As I live in a super humid area at the moment, I can say for certain that I dislike it a lot. The humidity makes any temperature above 25 feel like you are in a sauna. As for dry weather, that won't be ideal as well, because one might have a lot of skin problems like getting dry skin and even bleeding. There has to be a balance between both and that would be my ideal climate.

My Personal Answer:

Are you in the habit of checking the weather forecast? When? How often?

Answer 1:

Well, as we all have smartphones these days, I receive it directly on my screen. Every time I turn my phone on, I see a notification and an icon of the weather forecast. Now If I want to learn more information, I could click on it and get a detailed forecast. I don't do that so often though. I think the icon is more than enough for me to know the temperature and the type of weather I have to expect.

My Personal Answer:

Yes, I am. For me, the weather forecast is essential information I need to start my day. I always check it early morning on my mobile phone and then plan the day ahead. The decision of whether I'd take an umbrella with me for the day or not is one of the most important ones for my early morning. It might sound a bit obsessive, but I don't like getting wet from the rain, so I prefer to check the forecast a few times than to get rained on randomly at some time of the day.

Answer 1:

My Personal Answer:

Is the weather important for your daily life?

Answer 1:

I guess it is a little bit. It is important to know if it's going to rain or snow, or even if there is going to be a heat weave. This allows me to protect myself better if I need to. Also, it's important for planning events. If I wanted to have a picnic with my friends, for instance, I'd need some nice warm (not too hot) weather, and so on. It's quite important.

My Personal Answer:

Yeah definitely. I like to plan around the weather. For instance, where I live in the summer, we get some stronger typhoons. It makes sense to prepare in advance, in case the typhoon wreaks havoc in the city. Other times I'd plan a hiking trip. For that, I definitely need to have a clear view of the forecast throughout the day. Unfortunately, often times I get tricked into believing too much in the predictions. I've found the forecast changing and at times completely wrong. That I can't plan around as of yet.

My Personal Answer:

Is the weather important for your mood?

Answer 1:

My favorite weather is sunny and warm. I really enjoy going out on my own or hanging out with my friends in that kind of weather. It can definitely affect my mood and my feelings during the day. Sunny weather makes me smile and feel joyful. It really makes my day.

My Personal Answer:

I try not to take the weather too seriously. After all, I have no control over it, so I just go out and take it as it is, regardless if it's cloudy, rainy, or sunny. However, I have to admit that it does affect my mood a little. I don't like it if it's cloudy for a long period of time. If it's been raining or cloudy for a week or two, that adds a very dark, depressive feeling to my day. A bright and shiny sunny day can change that mood immediately, and so I do like it when the sky clears up.
